Could Sudden Fainting During Play Be a Sign of a Tumor?

This case involves a 12-year-old dog that underwent a splenectomy after being diagnosed with a splenic tumor.

Reason for Visit

The owner reported that the dog collapsed during a walk and was immediately brought to our hospital for emergency evaluation.
 * At the owner's request, a comprehensive senior health screening was performed.

The examination revealed:

Blood tests showed elevated inflammatory markers and anemia.

Abdominal ultrasound identified an abnormal mass in the spleen, leading to the diagnosis of a splenic tumor.

 Treatment & Surgery

→ As the patient was severely weakened to the point of collapsing, intravenous fluid therapy was administered for approximately one day to correct electrolyte imbalances and improve the dog's overall condition before surgery.

→ Once the patient's condition had stabilized, surgery was performed. Considering the dog's advanced age, our surgical team made every effort to minimize the anesthesia and operating time.

→ Because the spleen is a highly vascular organ, we utilized a state-of-the-art vessel sealing system, allowing us to seal blood vessels quickly, safely, and precisely. This enabled us to complete the surgery efficiently while maintaining the highest level of surgical care.

A canine splenectomy requires not only advanced surgical expertise but also careful postoperative management and prompt recognition and treatment of potential complications.

At SKY Animal Hospital, our experienced veterinary team is committed to providing the highest standard of medical care and making the best possible decisions for both our patients and their families.
